Super Bowl Sunday: A Letter to the Atlanta Falcons

Hey everybody!!! Sorry, I missed the Conference Championships and the Pro Bowl, but I was still in deep mourning after the way my Chiefs played in the divisional game. Today is Super Bowl Sunday and the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons are playing in Houston. I don't really care for the Patriots, and I feel like I need to address the Falcons.

Dear Atlanta Falcons,

How are you guys?  It has been a fabulous year for the Dirty Birds.  Congratulations to you, Matt Ryan, on winning league MVP.  Your former favorite target Tony Gonzalez has been calling it for weeks.  Aside:  Tony Gonzalez was on Lip Sync Battle this week. I think I'm going to just leave it at Ray Lewis won. We know why, but this blog is not for dissing Tony Gonzalez.

Atlanta, I am a Braves fan, and have been for almost 30 years. I've seen some bad sports teams in the ATL.  I've never been a Falcons fan, but there have been moment when I rooted for you guys.  When Deion Sanders, Brian Jordan, and Andre Rison were Falcons, I rooted for you.  When Bobby Hebert was your quarterback, I rooted for you. I rooted for you when Morton Anderson was your kicker. For FIVE straight years, I rooted for you guys to help get my favorite all time player, Tony Gonzalez, a Super Bowl ring.  I risked life and limb twice by entering the Super Dome in a Falcons jersey to root for you guys against the Saints.

Now, I know I have been throwing a lot of shade in your general direction the last few years since Tony Gonzalez has retired. I have sent a lot of hate, and I have stated that I hoped all bad things happened to the Falcons after that last craptastic season you guys made Tony a part of. I admit this. I accept responsibility for my actions.

Falcons, my Chiefs are once again at home, and there is no one left for me to root for, so I'm putting all my faith in you. I'm pretty sure Chiefs Kingdom is rooting for you. I'm sure most of the Nation is rooting for you, I know that the last 7 MVPS have lost the Super Bowl, I know the Falcons have never won a Super Bowl. I know that the last several teams who have worn white have won the Super Bowl, and the Pats are wearing white. I know what Tom Brady is capable of, but he is not unbeatable. So, Atlanta, I am begging and pleading, and praying that you guys RISE UP like the rebels and defeat the Empire. Defeat the Emperor and Darth Vader. Luke, I mean, Matt, Tony G. has put all his faith in you, and he has been singing your praises for years.  Do for Tony and all the other Falcons who have never had an opportunity to taste the sweet victory of a Super Bowl.  If for no one else, please win it for me. I cannot take months of the smugness of Tom Brady if he wins. Do it for America, Atlanta!!
We are all rooting for you!!!!!

Sincerely,
Diana Dishes

If you haven't guessed it, I'm picking the Falcons for Super Bowl 51!!!!

Have a great Super Bowl Sunday!!! I'll be back next week with Dead Viewing and the return of The Walking Dead!  Until next time, "Laissez les bons temps rouler!!!!"

NFL Week 14: Only One Quarter of the Season Left

Ladies and gentle, we are, as they like to say, into the home stretch. Three-fourths of the season is now behind us, and most of us are wondering how it passed by so fast. The 49ers, Jets, Browns, and Jaguars have been eliminated from playoff contention.  Other than the Niners, did anybody really give those other three teams a real shot? They are fighting for draft position now.

Did you see the Chiefs game in Atlanta?  I did, and man was it a nail-biter! Eric Berry and Tyreek Hill put on a clinic in the ATL, but boy was I nervous when the Falcons lined up for that two-point conversion. Thank goodness for Eric Berry who already had a pick-six and snatched another from Matt Ryan taking the Chiefs from a one point loss to a one point victory. Then, they turned around and played the Raiders at Arrowhead stadium.  The Raiders came in to the game in first place in the AFC West and left the game in second. Like Sunday's game, it wasn't a beautiful win, although Tyreek Hill was a highlight again, as was Travis Kelce who tied Tony Gonzalez's 4 game streak of 100 yards in a game, and did a wonderful impression of Raiders' punter Marquette King who retaliated with a tweet mocking Kelce's reality show.  The Chiefs lost LB Derrick Johnson to a ruptured Achilles. He was clearly missed in the second half of the game, and let's not even start on the turnovers and the lack of scoring by the offense in the second half.  Mad props though to the Chiefs Defense who also held the Raiders to only 13 points. The Chiefs may have played and ugly game, but a win is a win and now the Chiefs hold the tiebreaker in the AFC West and are in first place.

As it stands in the AFC, New England is the one seed, Kansas City is the two seed, followed by Baltimore at three and Houston at two. Currently, the two wildcard teams are both form the AFC West, Denver and Oakland.  That said, the Dolphins, Steelers, Colts, Bills, Titans, Chargers, and Bengals still have a chance.

On the NFC side, Dallas has already clinched a playoff berth and are pretty secure with the one seed, while Seattle is two, Detroit three, and Atlanta four.  The two teams hold the wildcards right now are New York and Tampa Bay.  Still in the running, the Redskins, Vikings, Packers, Cardinals, Saints, Eagles, Panthers, Rams, and Bears.

The races are tight, and there are going to be some really good rivalry games ahead, including the Chiefs and Broncos rematch on Christmas night.  Congratulations are in order for Larry Fitzgerald who is now securely in third place on the NFL all-time receptions list.  He is behind Tony Gonzalez (number 2) and Jerry Rice (number 1).  Speaking of Tony G., Antonio Gates is closing in on his record for most touchdowns by a tight end. He is two touchdowns from catching him and three from passing.

Sorry about leaving out the Buccaneers/Chargers game last week, my bad, and I apologize, because I have no idea why I picked Jacksonville either. Even with those errors, I still had a pretty good week with a 10-4 record bringing my season total to 121-69.  Fantasy players: the bye weeks are over and for some of you the playoffs are beginning. Good luck!!! My Lucille Swings team slipped up last week, but held on to the 1st place position.  Lochte and Loaded finally ended their losing streak and the 4th place position.

NFL Week 13: Did You Just See What I Just Saw?

Welcome back, everybody!!!! I hope you have had a wonderful weekend! I know you cannot see my face right now, but I assure you that after last week's victory over the Denver Broncos, my Chiefs have me smiling and somewhat walking on air.  Did you see it?! Now, I'll admit that I am a bit superstitious. I don't really watch Chiefs games in their entirety.  Why? Because it seems that when I do they lose. I know, I know, that it is irrational. Heck, they won a game while I was actually in the building, but when I watch those national televised games they seem to do better when I'm not watching, which is why I was over on AMC watching one of the more boring episodes of The Walking Dead.  When I went back to the game the Chiefs were up, but then Denver came roaring back, and it looked as if the Chiefs were going to lose once again on national television. Against all hope, they tied the game, and it went to overtime. When I say I was under my covers, hiding my face during that overtime, I truly mean it. I had set the tv timer to go off, and I was peeking over the tops of my covers begging the Chiefs to find a way to win and not lose this game. Then, one of my new favorite players, Cairo Santos kicked a field goal that hit the upright and bounced in.  I thought it was no good. I thought it was no good and exploded out of the bed throwing covers everywhere. When the refs signaled, I screamed like a lunatic, like a raving lunatic!! The Chiefs (even though I did not pick them) had beaten the Broncos. Round 2 will come on Christmas night at Arrowhead.

Last week also marked a special occasion for Diana Dishes. Believe it or not, I posted my 300th post last week! It really crept up on me. I only realized today that my "Dead Viewing" post on "Swear" was post number 300. Not bad, I've posted about The NFL, politics, Tony Gonzalez, pop culture, books, Tony Gonzalez, Shawne Merriman, Stephen King, Harry Potter, and of course, Tony Gonzalez. There are not many posts that I regret, but I write what I write with little or no editing, because, I like to turn in a first draft of my work as it is as it comes to me. Keeping it simple.

Speaking of Tony Gonzalez, this week the Chiefs play the Atlanta Falcons in the Georgia Dome. One reporter dubbed it the "Tony Bowl."  The last time these two teams played it was at Arrowhead, the Falcons won, and Tony Gonzalez dunked for the last time at Arrowhead. Many Chiefs fans took umbrage to that event. I'm not most Chiefs fans, but to paraphrase Slim Pickens, I hope the Chiefs find it in their heart to roll into Atlanta and beat the Falcons until they were dead. Uhm, not dead, but badly, shaken...I'm okay, now, but I'm never going to forgive the Falcons for that hot mess of a last season they gave Tony Gonzalez, and their little to no attempt to trade him when everyone in the world knew the only place they were going was home.

The Cowboys won their 11th straight game, Green Bay broke their losing streak, New Orleans put a beatdown on Greg Williams and the Rams, and Oakland won their 5th game in a row. Ugh. Oakland. The Chiefs will welcome them to Arrowhead on Thursday Night Football. By the way, have you heard that the NFL is thinking of doing away with Thursday Night Football? Honestly, I wouldn't miss it. Half the time, if the Chiefs aren't involved I don't watch Monday or Thursday Night Football.

Rob Gronkowski is done for the season after having surgery on his back. I once stated that Gronk would eventually be the greatest tight end ever, if he could stay healthy.  This is his third back surgery. He is still an awesome force, but he is going to have to learn how to play smarter. Darren Sharper, who I regret to say used to be a favorite of this page, was sentenced to 20 years in California for his multiple rape charges. I still cannot get over how disgusted I am that I thought he was a good guy. What a despicable human being he turned out to be. Twenty years is not long enough in my opinion.

On Thursday, we found out that former Chiefs player Joe McKnight was killed in a road rage incident in New Orleans, just a few months after former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith was killed in a road rage incident. I can't believe that any thing in either of those situations merited a gun. How have we gotten to this point in our society that now we are willing to kill people because they cut us off? Seriously, I had a fender bender this year, and the guy got out yelling at me, even as I apologized.  I know cars are a great investment, but I have never valued my car over a person's life. That's what insurance is for. We, for all our bravado, appear to be a country afraid of each other. I just see this as another senseless tragedy that could have been avoided. Rest in Peace, Joe McKnight.

Last week, I improved to 111-65 after going 9-4 in my picks (yeah, I can't believe I didn't pick the Chiefs either).  My Lucille Swings team improved to 10-2 and is holding on to the top spot in my league, while Lochte and Loaded appears to be circling the drain after dropping a third game.  Bye teams this week are Cleveland and Tennessee.

NFL Week 10: Well, That Wasn't What We Expected...

Welcome back, everyone!!! For better or for worse, the national blight is finally over, and like him or not, Donald Trump will become the next President of the United States of America. Those are words I truly never expected to say. It's kinda like saying the Jacksonville Jaguars are Super Bowl Champions, but at least that junk is behind us for at least 2 years, when the next cycle will drive us into the ground.

So, how was your week? My Chiefs pulled off a win against those Jaguars-barely. Yeah, Alex Smith and Spencer Ware didn't play, and Jeremy Maclin barely played (fantasy peeps, he is out this week), and still no Justin Houston, but seriously, this game should not have been as close as it was.  Mad props to Charcandrick West and Cairo Santos who helped my Lucille Swings team eek out a victory this week. FYI, Travis Kelce, get it together, man!!! You are a pretty good tight end, but son, you are not Tony Gonzalez, you are not going to get those calls, and you need to chill. That $24,000 fine you received this week should be a wake up call. We need you on the field not in the locker room, especially when I play you over Jimmy Graham who would have pounded my opponent into submission, rather than having a 90.70-90.64 skin of my teeth victory.  BY THE BY, JIMMY, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL YEAR?
Speaking of Tony Gonzalez, Friday was the fourth anniversary of Tony Gonzalez scoring his 100th touchdown, the first tight end to do so (for those new to the blog, I was actually there to see him score that touchdown against the Saints in the Super Dome). He later scored 101 in the same game. He currently holds the record for Touchdowns for tight ends with 111, but that record will probably belong to Antonio Gates by the end of the year and Rob Gronkowski in the next few years if he can stay healthy.  Also on Friday, the NFL Network revealed a revamped Top 10-Tight Ends list, and the #1 Tight End of all time?  Tony Gonzalez...nothing else needs to be said. Congrats to the G.O.A.T!!!

Last week, Green Bay and Denver ruined what could have been a perfect week. Even so, I'll take an 11-2 week which brings my record to 81-52. My fantasy teams are also sitting pretty:  Lucille Swings is in first place with a 7-2 record, and Lochte and Loaded is in second place with a 6-2 record. Fantasy fans: Buffalo, Oakland, Indianapolis, and Detroit all have byes this week.

NFL Week 8: Living on a Prayer...

With all respects given to Bon Jovi, we are almost at the halfway point boys and girls, and other than the New England Patriots, does anyone really, really, really want to control their division?  Sorry, I lapsed into the Spice Girls for some odd reason...I cannot explain Miami beating Buffalo or NY Jets beating Baltimore, or Atlanta allowing San Diego to come back to win. Well, at least my Chiefs won. Yay!!!!

Speaking of the Chiefs, I want to send best wishes to former Chiefs (Browns and Chargers) coach, Marty Schottenheimer.  He has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease.  Marty Schottenheimer is by far one of my favorite coaches (outside of Bill Walsh).  He was the coach when I became a Chiefs fan, and part of the reason I never actually root against the Chargers, (Shawne Merriman is the other).  I loved his spirit on the sidelines and love for his players, especially the relationship with Derrick Thomas. I really hate this disease which took the life of Pat Summit earlier this year. I truly wish Coach Schottenheimer and his family the best during this difficult time.

I'm somewhat recovered from last week's nightmarish edition of The Walking Dead, only to wake up to the nightmare that the Raiders, yeah, those Raiders are on the top of the pile in the AFC West. Ugh...I hate those guys. New England, sporting the best record in the league is atop the AFC East, while a Ben Roethlisberger-less Steelers team is 1st in the North with Houston first in the South.

Dallas is riding high in the NFC East, Minnesota in the North, Seattle in the West, and Atlanta is on top of that dumpster fire known as the NFC South. Atlanta-Dumpster...made me think of Glenn for a moment...pour one out for Glenn Rhee y'all...

Oh, by the way, Tony Gonzalez news, the former All-Pro tight end and future Hall-of-Famer, will join Charles Woodson as NFC legends captains at the 2017 Pro Bowl. Jerome Bettis and Ray Lewis will be the captains for the AFC. FYI, Tony G should have been with the AFC, but at least he will give me a reason to watch the Pro Bowl again.

Well, much like the carnage of last week's The Walking Dead, my picks took a major hit (no pun intended, although fitting).  I had a disastrous week with a 7-8 finish, bringing my record to 61-46 at the halfway point. My fantasy teams, you asked? Lucille Swings is currently holding it down in first place with a 5-2 record, while Lochted and Loaded is 4-2 and holding its own in third place (not bad for a raging hot mess of a team).  Fantasy Players: Miami, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, NY Giants, San Francisco, and Los Angeles all have byes this week.  Now, let's hope I can right the ship this week.

NFL Week Seven: Et tu?

Well those first six weeks flew by quickly. We are one week away from the half way point. Injuries are still plaguing many of the more popular athletes in the league.  This week, the Steelers learn they will be without Ben Roethlesberger after he tore his meniscus and had surgery.  Added to that list is the Packers Eddie Lacey and James Starks.  The Cowboys are dealing with their potential QB controversy with Dak Prescott performing well, and Tony Romo scheduled to return in the next few weeks. We should all be so lucky, right?

Then, there is Josh Brown kicker for the New York Giants. This guy is piece of work. He receives only a one game suspension for what he calls treating his wife "like a slave." He appears now to be a serial abuser of his ex-wife Molly, and it appears that the NFL and the Giants knew more than they let on. Sorry, I so little sympathy for this guy, who claims he felt like a "god" when with his wife. The NFL truly needs to weed all of these abusive guys in the league. Being able to play a sport, act, or sing well does not allow a person to treat women in this manner. It is unacceptable. I'm a firm believer in zero tolerance for domestic violence. ZERO.

If you missed it, my Chiefs did win last week beating the dreaded Raiders (Raider Hater). Four years ago, I finally saw my first Chiefs game, and it was against the New Orleans Saints at the Super Dome. This week, the Saints head to Arrowhead to take on my Chiefs. (One day, I'm going to make it to Arrowhead.) The Saints are my aunt's favorite team, and I actually took her to her first Saints game, which was also the first time I ever got to see Tony Gonzalez play live and in person, but I digress. She and I will be sitting on opposite ends of the sofa this week as we watch my Chiefs beat her Saints. Yes, I am pettty, but you know this, right? My Chiefs won the last meeting when Jamaal Charles scored a touchdown in overtime in the end zone in front of me. It was awesome!

Speaking of Tony Gonzalez, he did a really good job, plus they gave him more lines, on NCIS.  He will be returning in the role of Tony Francis this week as well.  Looking forward to more acting work from Tony G.

Fantasy fans: Remember Big Ben and Eddie Lacey are out, and the Cowboys and Panthers have a bye this week. Last week wasn't so great, but it wasn't so bad either as I finished the week with a 9-6 record.  Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Indianapolis left me shaking my head, too.  My record is 54-38 on the year, so let's see if I can stay on the positive side.

NFL Week 6: What Quarterback Controversy?

It's week 6, and as if the action on the field is not enough, we have to deal with the off the field issues around the NFL.  Like Cam Newton, is he damaging his team by riding his segway down a busy street with no helmet?  Will Tony Romo be able to take back his job from Dak Prescott? What is wrong with Brock Osweiller? SC Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg calls Colin Kaepernick's protests stupid, before apologizing for not really understanding what it was about. Oh, by the way, Kaep will be starting today with 49ers after restructuring his contract.

Back to the field, how about those Chargers and that win against the Broncos that no one, not even Philip Rivers saw coming?  How about those shockingly horrible uniforms the Broncos were wearing? That uniform however matched their sloppy play against a San Diego Chargers team that had been finding multiple ways to lose close games.

So who in the office pool had Minnesota as the last remaining undefeated team?  They lose Teddy Bridgewater before the season even began, and they lose Adrian Peterson in the second week of the season (so did I, because he was on my fantasy team). The only thing they haven't lost is a game, even with Sam Bradford at the helm. Is he who we thought  he was going to be?  It's still early...

My Chiefs are headed to Raider land this week to take on Jack Del Rio and the rest of that (be polite). The Chiefs can't afford to take this team lightly. The Raiders are 4-1 sitting atop of the AFC West after that mess of a performance turned in by the Broncos who dropped to second with his 4-2 record, while the Chiefs are sitting only 2 games above the basement dwelling Chargers.  The Chiefs went into their bye with an embarrassing nationally televised game against the Steelers.  I'm hoping the first Raider week of the year goes my Chiefs way.

I know, I know, Tom Brady won his first game back. I get it, but we all expected it, and it was Cleveland, so...Fantasy Fans, do not forget that Minnesota and Tampa Bay have byes this week.

For the fans who think that I don't still follow the Tony Gonzalez goings on:  Tony Gonzalez will be appearing on this week's episode of NCIS. Hopefully, he will have more than the one scene he has had in the previous two episodes. Also, Tony G. will be appearing on Spike TV's Lip Sync Battle later this season competing against Ray Lewis, yeah, that Ray Lewis.  He will also be in the new XXX movie with Vin Diesel which will premiere in January. So much for an easy retirement.

Last week was a great one for me. One: because the Chiefs were not on tv to embarrass me, two: my fantasy team Lucille Swings cleaned up without a kicker (4-1, y'all), and three: I went 11-3 last week with my picks bringing my season total to 45-32.

NFL Week 13: Raider Week

Welcome back, everybody! I'm still recovering for a couple of reasons this week. Number One: that train-wreck of a mid-season finale for The Walking Dead. I was really unimpressed with that. No Daryl, Sasha, or Abraham, Morgan's stupidity, and Sam...ugh...Sam, but I digress. The other is the surge that has taken place in Kansas City. My Chiefs began the year with a 1-5 record, and then proceeded to lose Jamaal Charles and all hope of the playoffs. Yet, here they are--the Chiefs are on a 5 game win streak, and they have jumped over San Diego and Oakland and are now in second place in the AFC West, and potentially a wild card spot. I have been eating crow for a while now, because you guys will recall that I picked the Packers and the Chiefs for Super Bowl 50. I know, I know that people laugh, but you know what it is still a possibility. The Chiefs end the season with one of the softest schedules having to face the Raiders twice, the Chargers, Cleveland, and Baltimore.

The Raiders scare me the most. Why? Because that team is so freaking unpredictable. They looked really good at the beginning of the year, and now...who knows. I always know that this will be a knock down drag out dog fight regardless, because the Chiefs and the Raiders hate each other. HATE EACH other, and they play each other hard even when there is nothing is on the line. Now, each is an obstacle in the other's playoff chances. I expect nothing short of insanity and no less than 100 penalties during the course of the games--most of which will probably be against Oakland.

The Patriots' were finally defeated by Denver in overtime by Pey-Pey's back-up. So, Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers are the last team standing.  Who saw that back on week 1? Aaron Rodgers threw a hail Mary pass to defeat the Lions in the last seconds of the game Thursday night. Atlanta continued its freefall, as did the New Orleans Saints. This season may be the last we see of Sean Payton and Drew Brees in the Quarter.  Speaking of losing, Just Gonzo, my fantasy team, lost last week for the first time in 5 weeks by a mere 1.74 points. My feelings are still hurt, much like Deanna after that bite.

Last week, I was a better than average with a 9-5 record, bringing my total to 99-63. I have high hopes for both my picks and my fantasy team as the fantasy season heads into its playoffs.

Shout out to blog favorite Tony Gonzalez who was named to the Pac-12 All-Century Team! Just another honor for the future Hall of Famer. FYI, Doug Gottlieb pointed out that the Chiefs have been winning ever since Gonzalez was honored as the featured drummer at the Chiefs home game on October 25. Let's hope the streak continues in Oakland!

NFL Week 8: The Returned

Happy Halloween, everybody! Sorry about the air silence last week. It was the mom's birthday week, and I really wanted just to watch American Horror Story (which I am totally losing interest in) and The Walking Dead (I just can't believe that he is dead. I refuse to until I see more evidence). Since I've been gone, New England, Cincinnati, Denver, Green Bay, and Carolina have managed to stay undefeated.  Every one is bracing for Sunday's showdown between Peyton and Aaron (I'll be biting my nails waiting for confirmation about a certain pizza boy's fate, and I am not talking about Peyton Manning). Y'all know I'm rooting for Aaron in this showdown.

My Chiefs finally won another game!!! Yet, I'm not ready to do a dance just yet, because...they just frustrate the daylights out of me. This team is good on paper (notice I didn't say great), but they should be better than 2-5, and it is annoying that they are tied for last place in the AFC West and that the town in northern California is higher than my Chiefs. Hate that team, man. This week the Chiefs travel to London for a "home" against the Detroit Lions. First, I want to apologize to our British brethren who will suffer through this travesty of a football game live, as well as the fans who are traveling from the US and other countries to watch these mediocre teams battle for mediocre supremacy. The Chiefs are really testing my fandom.

Oh, Congratulations to Tony Gonzalez who was honored by the Chiefs last week, and who was inducted in the University of California's Hall of Fame this weekend. Congratulations #88! (or should that be #44) Now, you guys knew, this post would not be complete without a TG update. Also, get well soon to Jamaal Charles, who is recovering from knee surgery.

Fantasy fans: Remember, this is a bye week for Buffalo, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, and Washington. I finished week six with a 9-5 record which brings my total thus far to 55-36.

NFL Week 6: The Tracks of My Tears

Welcome back, everybody. The tears are still metaphorically flowing over here at Diana Dishes. Why? Well, if you haven't, heard Jamaal Charles who is easily the best player on the Chiefs has torn his ACL has been lost for the remainder of the season. Sigh...my favorite team just can't win for losing, because it's not bad enough that we lost J. Charles, the Chiefs lost the game in the final 30 seconds. At this point, I find it difficult to see the Chiefs salvaging this season. When the best player thus far is your kicker (thanks for the points Cairo Santos), things do not bode well. FYI, what the crap is going on with our vaunted defense? I swear, watching the Chiefs is like watching Titanic on a loop. You know how it's going to end, but you keep watching anyway.

In case you've missed it, New England and Green Bay are really, really good. I will be rooting for the Packers if they end up in the Super Bowl. Peyton Manning is looking un-Peyton Manning like. I can't figure out the Saints, 49ers, Eagles, and Ravens. They are just, meh... Is it just me, or has this whole season been a season of meh with all the injuries and lack of, anything, from teams who should be performing much better, yeah, you Seattle.

That said, I've been pretty good with my predictions this year. Most weeks have been a 9-10 pick win week. Last week, I was 9-5 which brings my total to 46-31. Fantasy players: Oakland, Dallas, St. Louis, and Tampa Bay have byes this week.

*Quick note: If you have Showtime, you can catch replays of Play it Forward, a documentary about my all-time favorite player Tony Gonzalez and his family, especially his older brother Chris. I'm anxiously waiting to watch myself. The trailer looks amazing. I missed the premiere, because I was working a high school football game...in the concession stand. P.S. as a fan of Tony G., I have greatly appreciated all of the promotion that went into this documentary this week. Y'all know I'm smiling right now, right? Y'all been here before.

Well, that's that. Until next week, "Oh, my friend, it's not what they take away from you that counts. It's what you do with what you have left."~Hubert Humphrey

NFL Week 2: Woe, Woe, Woe

I was completely excited everybody. So very excited. My Chiefs were going to be on national television, and for the first time, I was going to be able to participate in a Red day activity. Red days are celebrations before Chiefs home games. I usually don't participate in Red Fridays because my school has football games on Fridays, and I rock the school colors. This year, however, Red Thursday fell during our school's homecoming week, and it was costume day with the Seniors drawing the letter C (They traditionally hand out letters to each class to determine what their costumes.) I teach Seniors, so I was a Chiefs fan.

I was so excited! I had all my Chiefs gear right down to my Tony Gonzalez jersey and a Chiefs parking sign on my classroom door. The evening was so awesome. Will Shields was at the stadium being interviewed by Tony Gonzalez. The fans were out of their minds with excitement as Eric Berry made his return to Arrowhead after a battle with cancer.

The Chiefs took an early lead, and then each subsequent quarter found the Chiefs and Broncos tied. Now, both teams tried their best to give this game away on multiple occasions, but with a late touchdown by Knile Davis, the Chiefs looked like they had a chance to slip out the door with a victory. It was not to be. The Chiefs left too much time on the clock, and the frequent Bane of the Chiefs, Peyton Manning marched the Broncos down the field to tie the game. Then, the unspeakable happened. Instead, I don't know, taking a knee, the Chiefs try a run play with Jamaal Charles. Guys, you know that I love me some Jamaal Charles, but alas, he fumbled the ball, and some dude on the Broncos (I don't really care to say his name.) picked the ball up and ran it in stabbing every Chiefs fan in the stadium and around the world in the heart. We fans deserved better than that. Big ups to Tony Gonzalez though. He is really getting the hang of the reporter gig.

I don't even want to look at my fantasy team, because it was far to Chiefs heavy, and I predict that I will be 0-2 by the end of the week. Including mistakenly picking the Chiefs to win on Thursday night, I end the week with a 10-6 record with my picks. Not bad for week one in total. For those new to page, I pick Thursday night games with the Sunday Games. Fantasy Players, you still have two weeks before the bye weeks begin.

Day Thirty-eight: Redux-The Best of Diana Dishes

I have been going at this one post a night now for thirty-eight days. To date, I have published 235 total posts since my blog began on June 16, 2009.  I actually started writing my football posts (mostly about the Chiefs) when I was on MySpace (remember, MySpace?  I wonder if I can still access my page.).  I decided tonight to look back over the posts I have written.  Some have been funny; some have been sad; a lot have been written about Tony Gonzalez, and like in my profile, I don't apologize for that.  Looking back at the posts, I reviewed the stats, and tonight, I'm going to present my top 10 posts.  Now, I'm not famous or very popular for that matter.  I average about 10-20 views per post, and I'm okay with that, but sometimes, I post something that registers with some people.  I don't know why. Honestly, I write most of these for me to practice writing.

I based this top ten list on the number of page views the post received.

#10-"The Twilight Saga...or Why I Would Rather Watch Paint Dry" (November 19, 2011; 318 page views):  This post was a response to why I have not seen any of the Twilight movies.  Four years later, I still haven't seen one of these movies in its entirety, and I regret nothing.  This is actually one of my favorite posts.
#9-"Falcon Was Hiding in the Attic, While My Teams were in the Basement" (October 17, 2009; 363 page views):  The title came from a breaking news post, you remember, the little boy named Falcon whose parents thought he trapped in a balloon made by his father.  He turned out to be hiding in the attic.  At this time, I was mom to 4 fantasy football teams:  The Merry Mad Men, The Crazy 88s, Gonzalez y Gonzalez, and Hecate's Hellhounds.  They were struggling to say the least. (Yes, Tony Gonzalez was my fantasy TE on each team.)
#8-"2013 NFL Predictions Sure to Bite the Dust" (September 5, 2013; 480 page views):  Every year, even this one, I make my predictions for the NFL Season.  It was the first post of Tony Gonzalez's last season. I made the very bad choice of picking the Falcons as NFC Champions.  Ah, well, at least, I got to see TG play that weekend in the Super Dome (all smiles)
#7-"NFL Week 6 Picks" (October 16, 2011; 602 page views): This was one of my regular pick Sundays.  It was an average post. Nothing special. I don't know why it got so many hits.
#6-"Fantasy Draft #4: Matching Mugshots" (September 8, 2010; 729 page views): This was one of my fantasy football leagues draft. My team name was Matching Mugshots, named after Tiny and T.I.'s infamous mugshots.  FYI, starting at running back, Ray Rice, who knew.  Yes, yes...TG was the tight end.
#5-"Best "Fantasy" Tight Ends" (July 6, 2010; 890 page views): This was my list of the guys that I thought were the best looking players in the league, making full use of the play on words on the position of tight end.  There were a couple of tight ends, and a whole lot of good looking guys.  Forgive me for putting Darren Sharper on this list.  That post was 5 years ago. I don't think anyone knew what a scumbag he would turn out to be.
#4-"The Gatsby Complex: Part 4: Gatsby" (May 25, 2010; 1056 page views): Football season was long over, so I decided to do a post on The Great Gatsby, but it turned into 4 separate posts about the characters in the novel and comparing them to modern day celebrity.  It was a fun post, and the series was some of my favorite pieces.
#3-"Bless the Children" (July 5, 2011; 1095 page views): This was one of my more somber posts.  It was dealing with the lack of media attention when it comes to the disappearance of black children, especially Phylicia Barnes who was the center of that post.  I also thought they should make an effort to show missing children everyday.
#2-"Come Back, Shawne!!!!!" (August 5, 2010; 1520 page views): This was an open letter to Shawne Merriman.  It was about his trials and tribulations returning to the San Diego Chargers after a major injury.  This post got a big bump by Shawne Merriman himself! One of my twitter friends retweeted it to Shawne who retweeted it to his fans.  It still has the most comments of all of my posts, mostly by Chargers fans.  So, this became my favorite post.
#1-"My Favorite Celebrity Crushes" (June 16, 2011; 7382 page views): One summer day, I decided to embarrass myself by talking about all of the people I have had a crush on over the course of my existence. The list ranged from Philip Michael Thomas to David Justice to, of course, Tony Gonzalez, who apparently makes his way into practically every post.  It was a fun way to look at how my choices have changed over the years.
After looking at these posts, I realized that most of my writing fell off a bit during my two years in grad school.  I spent more time writing papers than blog posts.  This Lenten lesson will hopefully get me back into the habit of writing more.  I have attached links to all of the post. If you are interested in getting a look at some of my older works, just click on the title of the article.

Day Thirty-five: I Got Distracted

I have the attention span of a gnat. I was trying to write a post tonight, but I got distracted. How you ask?  I'm going to take you into a brief period in the life of my crazy brain.  I sat down to write a post on why I don't like the 2013 The Great Gatsby movie, but then I got distracted by Tony Gonzalez on Michael Strahan's A Football Life, but remembered I had seen it, so channeled the tv to Investigation Discovery to watch their new episode of Redrum.

After about two minutes, I saw a tweet from Bomani Jones about Darren Sharper, and I felt the need to respond, which led to a Buzzfeed article mocking Kylie Jenner's lips, which led to me taking a quiz about how many novels I have read that Roald Dahl's Matilda had read (22 out of 60, FYI).  This led to an article about which movies were better than the books, which should have led me back to the post that I wanted to write about...but it didn't.

Back to Twitter, someone posted an article about Celine Dion coming back to Las Vegas, to AOL...then, back to the article, because I'm going to write this article tonight, Dammit...Next, I saw a tweet about Married at First Sight, changed the channel to watch a little of this weirdo reality show.  Sean, FYI looks older than 34.

Then, there was another Buzzfeed post, and then, I was watching this dude pretend to be Voldemort singing a parody of "Uptown Funk." Hilarious by the way.  This led to a parody about Zelda and being a nerd.  Then, I saw an article inappropriately declaring Bill Goldberg dead, off to TMZ where Goldberg is instead talking about the wrestler who died in the ring this past weekend.  This led to an article they posted about the possibility of Darren Sharper making the Hall of Fame, which led to an article on Scott Fujita calling Sharper disgusting which lead me to Google to read the news...again.  Then, I realized that Youtube page was still open. I went to the Everything Wrong With page, and watched Everything Wrong With The Fifth Element, followed by EWW Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal," Katy Perry's "Roar," Iggy Azalea's "Fancy," and Ariana Grande's "Problem." I love sarcasm and mocking, this series is right up my alley. The MJ one was the funniest.  I just finished that, but not the article which led to this. I probably need help. I'll try that Gatsby article tomorrow.

Until next time, "I have the attention span of a 2-year-old. I like to jump from project-to-project."

Day Ten: My Favorite NFL Stars Part One

It is late. I don't know why I wait so late. Yes, I do, because lately I've been just trying to come up with topics.  Forty topics in forty days is rather a leap for me. Normally, I would write once a week and only during football season. So, this has been a bit different.  Anyway...
Tonight, in honor of my favorite players birthday, I am going to do a list of my favorite players.  I'm going to divide it into two parts.  Part one will cover retired players, while part two will cover current NFL players. These are players that I simply loved to watch play every Sunday afternoon.  Some, I just loved to watch, but all helped to make football my favorite sport.

#10-Shawne Merriman-Linebacker, San Diego Chargers.  I didn't want to like Shawne Merriman. He played for the enemy, but 1) he was cute, 2) he had that back story that would make Annie cry, and he would do the most horrible things to quarterbacks. He almost reminded me of Derrick Thomas. I know there are Chiefs fans who will hate me for saying that, but man, when Merriman was at his best he was so dang quick. Seriously, if it hadn't been for that game in Tennessee, and a bad decision to play on a bum wheel, who knows how good he could have been.  Still liked watching him play though, sue me.

#9-Junior Seau-Linebacker, San Diego Chargers.  I originally liked to look at Junior Seau.  Plus, he had an awesome name for a linebacker, SAY-ow!  Seau was a tremendous linebacker with a great smile, a big heart, and a penchant for destroying my Chiefs.  I was bummed that he (like Tony G.) never won a Super Bowl.  It's been almost three years, and I still can't believe the tragic way his life ended. He will be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in the Class of 2015.

#8-Steve Young-Quarterback, San Francisco 49ers. I didn't like Young at first.  He was taking Montana's place, and I didn't like it one bit. Young, though, grew on me.  Even though I always rooted for Joe to beat him when they played each other, no one was cheering louder than me when he finally won Super Bowl XXIX.  HOF Class of 2005.

#7-Ronnie Lott-Cornerback/Safety, San Francisco 49ers.  Yes, I'm aware he played for other teams, including a brief stint with the Kansas City Chiefs, but I loved watching him play for the 49ers. This guy was one of the toughest men in the NFL.  He had part of his finger amputated for goodness sakes!  HOF Class of 2000.

#6-Will Shields-Offensive Guard, Kansas City Chiefs.  Will Shields was a part of one of the greatest offensive lines in Kansas City Chiefs history, if not NFL history.  He blocked for Marcus Allen, Priest Holmes, and that guy I'd rather not talk about. 223 consecutive games, an iron man at guard. 12 time Pro Bowler, and now a member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2015.

#5-Marcus Allen-Running Back, Kansas City Chiefs.  Yes, I know he had his best years with a team that shall not be named, but when he moved over to the Chiefs, I could legitimately root for him. He was handsome and still better never lost a game to that team while he was a Chief.  Even at the tail-end of his career during his five years with the Chiefs he scored 44 touchdowns, averaged about 740 rushing yards a season, and about 230 receiving yards. HOF Class of 2003.

#4-Jerry Rice-Wide Receiver, San Francisco 49ers. Remember, this is not a Greatest of all time list. It's my favorite players list. What's not to love?  First, he's from my home state of Mississippi, and he is literally the greatest receiver to ever play the position. Fun was watching Montana to Rice, especially in that 55-10 beatdown on Elway and the Broncos, and later Young to Rice. He still holds practically every record at the position.  Yes, I know he played for other teams.  I just don't acknowledge those years.  My prerogative. HOF Class of 2010.

#3-Derrick Thomas-Linebacker, Kansas City Chiefs.  Derrick Thomas is the reason I became a Kansas City Chiefs fan. While I never have been nor ever will be an Alabama fan, I could not help but fall for this guy's play.  He was every quarterback's nightmare and still holds the single game sack record. He embarrassed more offensive lines than the law would allow, but his time was cut tragically short by an accident that claimed his life.  Hard to believe that has been 15 years. Still miss him.  RIP DT.  HOF Class of 2009.

#2-Joe Montana, Quarterback, San Francisco 49ers/Kansas City Chiefs. See what I did there. Most of these players I only acknowledged the teams that I actually would admit they played for. Joe Montana played for my two favorite teams.  He was my first football hero.  You like Tom Brady? Keep him, for me, Joe Montana is the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be. Never lost a Super Bowl, Brady. Never lost a Super Bowl... HOF Class of 2000.

#1-Tony Gonzalez, Tight End, Kansas City Chiefs/Atlanta Falcons. I have followed his entire career, perhaps a little too closely. I didn't think he was going to make it at the start, but I'm glad he is stuck around for another 16 years, and in the process, became the one of the greatest (I say the greatest)tight end of all time. Watching him catch a pass was a thing of beauty, and I was fortunate enough to see him catch his 100th and 101st touchdowns in person. If Derrick Thomas made me a Chiefs fan, Tony G. helped keep me in the Red and Gold.  Although I listed the Falcons, I still haven't forgiven them for that abomination of a last season they awarded him with, and unlike most fans, I didn't feel disrespected in the least when he dunked at Arrowhead.  Alas, he was the last on this list to retire taking his trademark dunk with him.  Happy birthday, Tony Gonzalez, hope to see you with the NFL HOF Class of 2019 or 2020 depending on whether or not he actually filed that pesky paperwork...

That's it. My favorite players. Remember, not a list of the greatest of all time, just mine.

Until next time, "Winners, I am convinced, imagine their dreams first. They want it with all their heart and expect it to come true. There is, I believe, no other way to live."-Joe Montana
